Preservation

The Moyode Woodlands Preservation Group, with the support of local and surrounding communities, is actively campaigning to see this wood opened as an amenity for the public. Already this wood is used for walks and trails. The campaign would like to see the wood being protected and being officially opened to the public as part of the government's Neighbourwood Watch Scheme, a scheme launched in 2007 to help communities manage and tend their local woods. This would involve installing signed nature trails, walks, family picnic areas, wildlife spotting facilities, trekking trails etc.

We are now living in a time where our environments are of primary concern. We need to be protecting our forests, not cutting them down. We need to be preserving our woodlands, not developing them for housing or quarries. These trees are our earth's green lungs. When Coillte was set up it was given a mandate to manage our public woods and forests, and also to be commercial to maintain itself. Times change - is that remit appropriate today? 20 years ago, when we were ignorant of the environmental disasters we face today, a commercial remit like this was fine. Now in the grip of a worldwide environmental crisis, we must ask the question:  is Coillte's remit still appropriate? Shouldn't we be preserving and protecting our forests? Shouldn't we be lobbying and pressurizing our government to catch up with other developed countries? Shouldn't we stop profiteering from our vital forest assets?
